KEFALONIAN MEATPIE

(1kg= 2.2 pounds lbs)

 

Ingredients (quantity for 2 bake pans)

 

  • 2 kg goat, or vail meat.

  • 1/2 kg white medium grain rice (Carolina), or long grain (nychaki)

  • 2 tomatoes

  • 2.5 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 200g Kefalotiri diced (kefalotiri is similar cheese to Parmezana)

  • 200g . kefalotiri grated

  • 1 egg

  • 3 cups olive oil

  • 1 glass of water

  • salt

  • pepper

  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg grated

  • 10 cloves 

  • 1 teaspoon marjoram

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon oregano

  • parsley

  • 4 garlic cloves

  • 1 onion

  • home made pastry (Alternatively, you can try a ready made pastry)

 

Preparation method

 

For the filling:

  1. In a saucepan chop the meat into small pieces ( as we do for souvlaki),  and saute with 1 cup oil for 5 minutes.

  2. Add 1 cup of water and let the meat be well cooked.

  3. Peel the onion , garlic , chop parsley , peel and chop the tomatoes and add all the ingredients in a food processor to make a uniform mixture.

  4. Then in the pot with the meat , add the rice , all the spices , salt , 2 cups oil , tomato paste and the mix from the food processor and continue cooking for 10 more minutes.

  5. Finally add cheese and egg.

  6. Line the dough sheet on a well greased pan bottom ( base of the pie), add the mixture of the pot , roll out the remaining pastry to make a lid for the pie.

 

Bake in preheated oven at 200 degrees until golden brown .
